Our SECRET SAUCE to a Smooth Loc Salon day.

What’s the secret?

Give yourself some time before your first client arrives.

Why? Have you ever wondered what goes into a day at a loc salon? Let me paint you a picture.

Let’s start with the salon's opening; here at Love of Hair Artistry (LOHA), we always begin by…

  • greeting the plants with a hello 😉

  • placing our things upstairs and out of sight

  • turning on the lights

  • spraying an aromatic room-clearing spray

  • turning on the diffuser, adding a few drops of my custom blend of essential oils

This is all done before the first client arrives.

It’s to bring peace to the space, not just for the guests coming into the salon during the day, but for us (me, the Loctician, and my assistant), who will be nurturing and caring for each client’s Locs.

Every day, we are all faced with things that will change our mood for the better or worse (unfortunately, for the worse in most cases).
Being a Loctician (or even an assistant to one), your day-to-day issues belong outside the salon.
I’ll repeat it…Keep. It. OUTSIDE. THE. SALON.

It’s easier said than done in most cases, so to help, we create a mood of comfort.
That is why my assistant and I start the day 30 minutes before opening to prepare ourselves better, being able to show up entirely for each client for the day.

The Reward

I love it when a client comes through the door and notices the fresh scent in the air and the calming feeling to release any worries for the time in the salon. It’s not just the scent in the air, the entertainment from the TV, or the music playing, but also the relaxing shampoo and easygoing conversation (or no pressure to have a conversation). I don’t know about you, but I feel ten times better when I get started like this compared to my past days coming straight from commuting and having to turn that nervous/anxious energy into calm/relaxation without any time before the client arrives.

It should be known, but it is sometimes overlooked as essential to our ability to serve others through hair-locing care.

When it became my regular…oh my goodness…GAME CHANGER!

I could show up with extreme focus on the task at hand for my guest. The smiles on their faces when completed and the outstanding conversation or boastful laughter within our sessions show how much it is working!

 Action Steps

I speak to the Locticians, but this step applies to everyday situations.

Take a moment by giving yourself time.

  • Schedule it as an appointment (I do)

  • Use this time to rebalance your thoughts and mood (hey, this is self-care)

This brings a better focus to everything you’re involved in…you will notice the difference, and others will, too!
